RE: NYSARC Trust Services Provides Two Grants to Support The Arc of Chemung

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Elmira, NY – The Arc of Chemung announces that they recently received two grants from NYSARC Trust Services for a total of $17,000.

“Both of these grants provide The Arc of Chemung with unique ways to support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities,” said Michael A. Doherty, Ph.D., Executive Director. “Ask yourself how important your free time is, and you understand what our Recreation Program is all about. Then ask yourself who you would want to speak for you if you weren't able to speak for yourself, and you understand our Guardianship Program. Both programs are essential to the people we support, and we are grateful to the NYSARC, Inc. Trust for their generosity,” Doherty added.

Recreation Program: A grant in the amount of $8,000 was received. The Arc of Chemung’s Recreation Program creates recreation, socialization and leisure opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. People with intellectual and developmental disabilities living in the community are very often socially isolated and lack the social skills to pursue a life with meaningful relationships.

Guardianship Program: A grant in the amount of $9,000 was received. The Arc of Chemung Guardianship Program administers guardianship services under the auspices of NYSARC, Inc. Corporate Guardianship Program. This is a program that is intended to provide guardianship supports to individuals in need of such supports but who have limited availability of family or other natural supports to fulfill this role. The Guardianship Program focuses on the best interests of individuals, while taking into consideration the   personal wishes, preferences and beliefs that afford each individual the greatest amount of independence and participation in decisions affecting the person’s life.

The Trustees of the NYSARC, Inc. Trust authorized a total of $1,874,000 in restricted grants from the NYSARC Trusts Remainder Funds awarded in 2015 to support recreation and guardianship statewide. NYSARC Trust Services administers supplemental needs trusts that enable people with disabilities to remain in their home and community while retaining Medicaid services and other government benefits.
