RE: Person Supported Receives Self-Advocacy Award

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Elmira, NY – The Arc of Chemung announces that the New York State Rehabilitation Association (NYSRA) recently presented the 2015 Thomas A. Maul Self-Advocacy Award to self-advocate, Marie Dean.

“Marie was living in an Individual Residential Alternatives (IRA) and expressed a strong determination to live on her own. Many people did not think she was not ready to move but she was determined. With the help of her MSC and others, Marie made a plan. Marie moved out on her own and is quite successful,” said Craig Mennig, Family Support Director, in his nomination. “Marie now works for The Arc of Chemung and demonstrates both good work skills and a positive work ethic. This summer, she started working as a Direct Support Professional in The Arc of Chemung's Family Support Program.”

The Thomas A. Maul Self-Advocacy Award is presented to individuals who have demonstrated significant strides in self-advocacy. Named for New York State’s longtime Commissioner of OMRDD, Commissioner Maul was a strong advocate for individuals with disabilities; constantly working to improve the efficacy of services to all who needed them. His service is exemplary and it is with great honor that NYSRA seeks to recognize self-advocates with this prestigious award.

The Thomas A. Maul Self-Advocacy Award is presented to individuals who ensure the voices of those receiving services are heard and recognized as a key component of the service delivery system.

“Formerly the president of The Arc of Chemung’s self-advocacy group, Class Act, Marie continues to be a role model for others,” Mennig added. “Marie exemplifies self-advocacy!”
